The Privacy Commission are a non-profit organisation run by a group of volunteers - working towards educating people about privacy, and how they can keep their personal information safe. We also work on various projects, providing services and advice to Internet users

As an Internet user your privacy becomes threatened on a regular basis without obvious knowledge.

Websites are able to determine a wealth of information about you merely by viewing their pages; some websites may track your activities; various web databases can contain information about you; public discussion forums may reveal information about you; market groups and companies can compile comprehensive profiles about your surfing behaviour; someone could digitally impersonate you; your passwords may be 'sniffed' or stolen; your e-mail may be read; and your government may already have, or are currently considering, legislation to reduce your Internet privacy rights.

In order to assist Internet users maintain their right to privacy, the Privacy Commission engages in activities in the following areas:

  • Provide privacy services to Internet users. Services include: finding, evaluating, selecting, organising, describing, and creating privacy resources; environment checkers and other tools as developed.
  • Monitor and report on known governmental privacy legislation affecting Internet privacy.
  • Monitor websites aimed at children and assess them on safety and how informative they are to parents.
  • Train Internet users on safe and private surfing practices via informative articles and a live helpdesk and ticketing system.
  • Develop technology and best practices for safe Internet surfing.
  • Conduct research aimed at improving our services and increasing the body of knowledge about Internet privacy issues.
  • Promote our services. Share what we've learned with the internet community.
  • Participate in efforts to create and promote relevant standards within Internet privacy.
  • Develop relationships with organizations pursuing similar goals and provide leadership in these activities.
  • Develop a model and plan for long-term sustainability and growth for our organization and services.

Our main aims are to:

      Educate people regarding their on and offline privacy and safety.
      Educate, and raise awareness of threats to children online.
      Provide free and confidential assistance to anyone with concerns or queries about their privacy, safety or other related issues.
      Offer a range of free services for anybody to use.
