Fax Machines and Copiers: Possible Privacy Threats?

Just like your home or office computer, fax machines and copiers have harddrives in them. These harddrives keep a record of what has been copied or sent through them just like if you were saving something to your computer.

These harddrives are the same as your ones at home. The information is there until it has been written over. This could lead to some privacy threats as anyone with the knowledge to extract this information, could see every fax and copy you've made and steal your personal information.

In Alberta, the government recently came out with a piece of legislation requiring that all fax machine and copier harddrives be wiped clean when the lease of the machine has expired or the company also has the choice of buying the harddrive of that particular machine. The price of the harddrives run around 0.

Just a little something for all you paranoid folks out there to think about. These harddrives, even though they contain this information, isn' that easy to reach and extract, but still, it is something to worry about.
